BID19
BID19ART - SECOND EDITION OF BIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S EXHIBITION
Art Without Borders
Following the success of its first edition, the Biennale Internazionale Donna (BID19) returned in 2019, expanding its international scope and reaffirming its mission to celebrate women’s creativity in contemporary art. With an even larger number of participants and a prestigious guest of honor, BID19 became a significant moment of cultural exchange and artistic dialogue.
One of the defining aspects of BID19 was its global reach, featuring artists from multiple continents, including:
- Africa – Mauritius
- Americas – Argentina, Mexico
- Asia – China, India
- Australia – Perth
- Europe – Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, England, Italy, Slovenia
This edition welcomed a diverse range of artistic expressions, including painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and performance, emphasizing the cultural richness and multidisciplinary nature of the Biennale.
An Unforgettable Opening Ceremony
The inauguration of BID19 was a landmark event, featuring the presence of Trieste’s Mayor, Roberto Dipiazza, alongside cultural representatives and international guests. The ribbon was ceremonially cut by Gabriela von Habsburg, marking the start of an exhibition that attracted over 8,000 visitors, despite being open only on weekends.
The event took place at Magazzino 26, a historic industrial space in Trieste’s Porto Vecchio, further embedding the Biennale in the city’s evolving cultural landscape.
A Turning Point for BID
In 2018, in preparation for BID19, the Biennale Internazionale Donna Association was officially founded by Alda Radetti, Antonella Caroli, and Svetlana Klincic. This marked a turning point in BID’s evolution, solidifying its status as a structured and recognized cultural institution. The growing institutional support, including from the Municipality of Trieste, helped BID gain greater visibility and ensure its continuity.
A Loss That Shaped the Future
Tragically, just days after the closing of BID19, on May 18, 2019, the Biennale suffered a great loss with the passing of Barbara Fornasir, one of its founding members and key curators. Her dedication, vision, and tireless work had been fundamental in shaping the identity of BID. In honor of her legacy, the 2021 edition of the Biennale (BID21) was dedicated to her memory, ensuring that her impact would live on in the future of the event.
The Legacy of BID19
BID19 strengthened the foundation of the Biennale, proving that there was a growing need for a dedicated platform for women’s artistic expression. By bridging local heritage and international innovation, this edition positioned BID as an essential event in Trieste’s cultural calendar.
With its expanded international participation, high-profile collaborations, and increased public engagement, BID19 set the stage for even more ambitious future editions, ensuring that women’s voices in contemporary art continue to be heard, recognized, and celebrated.
Gabriela von Habsburg: The Guest of Honor
BID19 was honored to have Gabriela von Habsburg, internationally renowned sculptor and granddaughter of the last Emperor of Austria, as its guest of honor. A key figure in the art world, she presented some of her stainless steel sculptures, adding prestige and reinforcing BID’s commitment to high-level artistic discourse. Von Habsburg also played an important role in connecting the Biennale with broader European cultural networks, strengthening Trieste’s position as a center for contemporary art.
