BID21ART - THIRD EDITION OF BIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S EXHIBITION

“Trasformazioni Silenziose / Silent Transformations”

The third edition of the Biennale Internazionale Donna (BID21) took place in 2021, a year still marked by global challenges. In response to the ongoing pandemic, BID21 embraced a hybrid format, combining physical and digital experiences to ensure accessibility for artists and audiences worldwide.

BID21 explored the deep and often unnoticed transformations shaping our world, particularly those affecting women and nature. At the core of this edition was the ecofeminist movement, which connects environmental and gender issues, highlighting the role of women in addressing climate change and sustainability.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its profound impact on society became another key focus, inspiring artists to reflect on resilience, isolation, and renewal. A dedicated section of the exhibition showcased artworks created during the lockdown period, providing a powerful insight into the emotions and struggles of women artists in uncertain times.

As in previous editions, BID21 was hosted at Magazzino 26, a historic industrial space in Trieste’s Porto Vecchio. The exhibition occupied three floors of the venue, offering visitors a rich artistic experience blending painting, sculpture, photography, video art, digital installations, and performance pieces.

This edition was also a tribute to Barbara Fornasir, the former curator of BID, who passed away in 2019. Her dedication and vision played a crucial role in shaping the Biennale, and BID21 honored her memory by continuing to provide a platform for women’s artistic expression.

CURATOR OF THE 3rd INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S BIENNIAL

Gabriela Von Habsburg

Gabriela von Habsburg

At the heart of BID21 was Gabriela von Habsburg, an internationally renowned sculptor and curator. Known for her monumental stainless steel sculptures, she has exhibited across Europe, the United States, and beyond. Her work, characterized by geometric precision and dynamic compositions, explores the interplay of light, space, and movement.

As curator of BID21, von Habsburg brought a unique artistic vision, ensuring a selection of works that deeply resonated with the theme of transformation. She helped shape the exhibition into a dialogue between different generations and cultures, reinforcing the Biennale’s international reach. Her connection to Trieste, a city rich in history and artistic innovation, made her the ideal figure to lead this edition, bridging the past with the contemporary.
