The Octave

Symbolizing the creative power of transformation and finding its inspiration in the diapason, the basic miracle of music, or in the stanza, a popular form of poem in medieval Italy, later adopted by the romantic poets, a single panel consisting of four twin squares represents cosmic balance and the complementarity of opposites. Each square has its own breathing space where the inner and outer worlds coexist as undulating lines or geometrical forms. Four fundamental colours – red, green, ocher and blue – and four elements – fire, air, earth and water. The gold is the fifth element, theQuintessence, the "Élan vital" that breathes through all that exists and that unites these eight panels, thereby expressing both unity and diversity, source andfinality, wholeness and fragmentation.

Born in 1947 in Belgium to an American father and Belgian mother, she grew up in an international environment. A graduate of theUniversity of Brussels, She began her career as a simultaneous interpreter in London, and later in Vienna at the International Atomic Energy Agency.
